Frequently asked questions
Short answers to questions about using the Geoládák application.
Update and search
How do I update the geocache list?
Tap the download icon at the top of the map, then select "Cache list (basic data only)". You can start the update at the bottom of the main menu, by tapping on the date of the geocache list, or on the "Settings → Offline use" page.
Why can't I see my own logs or mark my finds?
Log in with your geocaching.hu account. The app downloads the marking of finds upon login and every time the geocache list is updated. You can download the list of your own logs on the "My Logs" page, using the update icon on the top right.
Does updating the geocache list also download the full descriptions?
No, it only updates the basic data of the geocaches. The complete data of a geocache is downloaded the first time you open the data sheet, if you have an internet connection. You can download the data sheets of several geocaches at the same time from the map download menu.
Detailed instructions: Which data is downloaded by which update?
How can I update the data of a single geocache?
Open the data sheet of the geocache, and on the "Info" tab, in the "Basic data" section, tap the "Refresh" button.
Detailed instructions: Open, first download and update a complete geocache database
Why is the data sheet of a previously opened geocache not updated by itself?
If the complete data of the geocache is already on the device, the app shows the stored version, so it can be used even without internet. For up-to-date data, tap the "Refresh" button in the "Basic data" part of the "Info" tab. You can update the logos by pulling down the "Logs" tab.
Detailed instructions: Open, first download and update a complete geocache database
How can I search for a geocache by name or geocache code?
Open the main menu item "Search" and enter at least three characters. The search engine searches the names, codes and descriptions of geocaches stored on the device, as well as the names of downloaded locations.
Can I also search for coordinates?
Yes. On the "Search" page, enter the coordinates of the geocache in the set coordinate format (for example É 47° 30.000) or as a decimal number (for example 47.5) can also be entered.
Why can't the search engine find a geocache, location or description?
The "Search" page only searches the data downloaded to the device and only shows geocaches that are also displayed by the map filters. Check the filters for "Places → Geoládák", update the geocache list, or open the relevant geocache data sheet to download the complete data. Locations can only be searched by name, and the category data must be downloaded.
Where can I find geocaches near me?
In the main menu, select the menu item "Nearby caches". In the list, you can see the distance of the geocaches, and by tapping on a geocache, you can open its data sheet.
How can I set how far the app should search for nearby geocaches?
On the "Settings → General" page, set the desired search area with the "Max distance for nearby caches" slider.
Is it possible to set the geocache list to be automatically updated when starting?
Yes. On the "Settings → Offline use" page, turn on the "Auto-refresh on start" option. With the "Auto-refresh on WiFi only" switch, you can limit the update to Wi-Fi.
Map and display
How can I switch to another map?
In the top bar of the map, open the layer selector and choose another base map. You can also turn on additional map layers here.
Why is a map missing from the layer picker?
Look at "Settings → Maps → Layer selector items" and enable the desired map. Some layers require their own API key ("Settings → API keys"), others, such as the layer showing your finds, require a geocaching.hu login.
How can I show only geocaches that have not been found yet?
At the bottom of the map, tap the “Places” button. On the "Geoládák" tab, in the "User" filters, leave the "Not found" option on and the "Found" option off.
Why do I see a moving crate even though I have hidden the geocaches I found?
In the "Exceptions" section of the "Places → Geoládák" tab, the "Show moving caches regardless of found status" setting is turned on to show the moving crates regardless of the find filter. Turn it off if you want to hide them too.
Can I filter by geocache type, status or attributes?
Yes. On the "Places → Geoládák" page, set the desired geocache types, states and attributes. Next to each filter, you can see how many geocaches correspond to it.
How can I display only my favorite geocaches?
On the "Places → Geoládák" tab, turn on the "Only favorites" filter.
Why did geocaches disappear from the map?
Check the filters for “Places → Geoládák”: filtering by type, status, find and favorites can also hide geocaches. Filters also affect results for "Search". If you are looking for a new geocache, update the geocache list as well.
How can I see all the points of a multibox?
Tap on the geocache map marker, then check “Show all cache points”. You can turn on the points of all geocaches by setting "All multi- and own points" in the "Places → Geoládák" tab. You can also reach the points on the "Points" tab of the geocache data sheet.
How do I adjust the size of the map markers?

Tap on the marker of your own position on the map and turn on the "Fix in center" option. You can also set the same on the "Settings → Maps" page with the "Keep my location centered" switch.
How can I rotate the map to my direction of travel?
Tap the marker of your own position and turn on the "Rotate to direction" option, or use the "Rotate map to heading" switch on the "Settings → Maps" page. You can disable manual rotation with the setting "Block manual rotation".
Is there a quick way to turn on and off centering and orientation rotation?
Yes. Long press the position button in the lower right corner of the map: this turns both options on or off at the same time. With a short tap, you can adjust it to your own position. If the map is rotated and rotation to the direction is not turned on, a short tap first sets the map to north.
Why did centering turn off when I opened a point?
If you go to a selected point on the map from the search engine, the lists or your profile, the app turns off centering and rotation in the direction so that the point remains on the image. You can then turn them back on manually.
Where can I change the color of the routes?
In the "Colors" section of the "Settings → Maps" page, you can add a different color to the route plan, the loaded and fixed track, the connecting line of multipoints, and the forest visit restriction layer.

Why does background monitoring use more battery?
Monitored points and area warnings use background positioning even when the screen is closed. The app does this sparingly: it requests no new position while you are standing still, and on Android it updates at most every 10 seconds, so a warning may arrive a few seconds later. At the top of the page "Settings → Alerts" you can see whether background monitoring is turned on; you can turn off unnecessary warnings here.
How can I see my own SOTA and POTA activations?
On the "Settings → Radio points" page, enter your call sign and then update your activations. The app marks the corresponding activated peaks and parks.

Can I view a point of the level profile on the map?

You can also choose a breakdown according to "Way type" and "Steepness", if the designer has provided data for it.
How do I turn on 3D terrain?
In the "Map elements" section of the map's layer selector, turn on "3D terrain". If the view cannot be tilted, check the "Settings → Maps → Block manual rotation" switch, because it also disables manual tilting. The display also requires the height data of the given area.
Can I turn off house numbers or tourist signs separately?
Yes, for the “Geoládák” vector basemap. In the "Map elements" section of the layer selector, "POIs", "House numbers", "Cycling routes" and "Trail markings" can be switched separately. Details of other basemaps downloaded as images are not modified by these switches.
Can I choose what level of detail to download an offline map?
Yes. For supported map layers, you can mark the zoom levels separately in the download window; the tile number is also visible next to them. Select only the necessary levels. The offer also depends on the current magnification of the map and the download limit.
Can I start logging from a QR code?
Yes, some supported QR codes open the log editor with a pre-filled geocache code and password. This requires the mobile app's QR reader, internet and geocaching.hu login. Check the entry and send it separately: scanning is not yet submission.
Does the draft log also keep my pictures?
Yes. The draft also stores the selected images and captions, and then loads them back into the editor when the submission continues. Saving the draft does not yet upload the images to geocaching.hu.
Can I also save my favorite geocaches and geocache notes to the cloud?
Yes. In the profile saving options, the "Cache points, passwords" category also contains the favorite marks and geocache notes. The same category can be turned on for automatic saving; Geoládák cloud storage account required.
Can I open a GPX or FIT file directly from the file manager?
The mobile application can handle such file opening: select Geoládák in the "Open with" option of the file manager, if the system offers it. You can continue the import on the "Tracks" page for the track; in the case of a points-only FIT, the points are added to "My places". If the transfer does not work, use the in-app operation "Import file".
What is the terrain shading "Sun position" slider for?
After turning on "Hillshade", you can open the time of day controller on the map. With the slider, you can change the time used for shading, so you can look at the terrain in a different light. This is a map illustration, not a measurement of the live lighting conditions of the location.
What image files can I upload to the log from the browser?
The file selector accepts JPEG and HEIC/HEIF images, you can select several at once. The app converts HEIC/HEIF images to JPEG. PNG files are not supported by this upload interface.

How can I view a coordinate directly from the geocache description?

Save the design, then create a cloud backup of the category "Route plans" on the Profile. Log in to the same cloud storage account on your phone and start the action "Restore data" for this category. Backfilling is a manual process and may overwrite the phone's existing routing plans. Download the offline map and geocache data separately.
Can I see where I was most active on a map?
In the layer selector, turn on "Found heatmap"; the current interface requires geocaching.hu login for this. The layer illustrates locally available geocache hits and POI visits. Visits belong to your cloud storage account. This is an activity overview, not a GPS recording of the route traveled.
Why do I see several different distances for the same geocache?
The straight-line distance is the direct distance between your own position and the target. In addition to a loaded route or track, the distance along the line can also be displayed, along with deviations from the line as the crow flies. The "Path length" data of the geocache is separate from this, a value belonging to the geocache data sheet; not a path freshly designed from your own situation.

Will "Navigation" transfer my entire route plan to the other app?

Where can I find the application manual?
In the "Help" section of the main menu. You can browse topics or search in full descriptions and frequently asked questions, even without an accent. The first version is available in Hungarian.
How can I share my position live?
Open the “Live tracking” page from the main menu, then start a new tracking or join with the six-letter code you received. You must sign in to your cloud storage account; you can be a member of one tracking at a time. After creating or joining, sharing starts both in the app and in the browser; you can stop it with the “Share my location” switch. Leaving the page does not stop it by itself. One account shares from one device at a time: if you switch it on on your other device, the previous one stops, and if you rejoin with the code while already a participant, sharing does not switch on by itself. Points and trails are shown by the “Live tracking” layer of the main map. The tracking settings control what others can see; the same applies to the participant list. Tracking belongs to the account, not the device: only one device per account can share at a time, so several devices on the same account cannot be tracked together (each needs its own account).
Do I need an account for a live tracking viewer link?
No. The viewer link you received opens the main map in a browser, also after reloading, without signing in or going through the setup wizard, and it does not share your own position. The map refreshes every 15 seconds and pauses in a hidden tab. The tracking settings control whether trails are visible. If the link is invalid or switched off, ask the organiser for a new, working link.
What happens if there is no signal during live tracking?
Until then the others see your last known location with “last seen: hh:mm”. The phone keeps collecting your trail points, and they are not lost. When you have signal again, your location updates at once, and the whole stretch without signal appears on the others’ map and on the viewer link within about a minute.
