Offline use
Download before you go, updates and storage.
Which data is downloaded by which update?
| Data | Update or download location | What do you expect? |
|---|---|---|
| Basic list of geocaches | Map → download → “Cache list (basic data only)”; main menu date; Offline use | Basic data and logged in personal search status. |
| Complete geocache data sheet | First opening; Info → Update; batch download | Detailed geocache data and description. |
| Geocache log list | Geocache → Logos → pull down list | Logos for the geocache. |
| My logos | My logs → top update | List of own posts. |
| Images | View and cache enabled; batch image download | Only the images actually downloaded and stored. |
| Map tiles | Map → download, at supported layer | The selected neighborhood and downloaded detail. |
| Location data | The appropriate POI, public well, heyjoe, radio or conservation settings page | The selected database. |
| Catalog trail | Tracks → Catalog → download item | Downloadable route of the tour. |
Preparation before the trip
With Internet access, update the geocache list and then download the complete data sheet of the geocache to be visited: for this you can open them for the first time or start a batch download. If necessary, update a previously stored data sheet separately.
Download the necessary images and map tiles as well. If you use a trail or location database, download it as well. Before leaving, turn off the network temporarily and open the content you want to use: so you can check the actual offline availability on the given device.
The existence of a description of a geocache does not prove that the surrounding map or all log images have been downloaded. The area viewed on the map does not represent complete offline coverage at all zoom levels.
Batch geocache data sheet download
Access: main map → upper download icon → "Batch downloads". Set the map to the affected area, then select the "Full data sheet of geocaches visible on the screen" option. "Full listing for moving caches" is a separate batch operation.
The confirmation window indicates the number of affected geocaches and the amount of latest logs requested per geocache. You can also request pictures with the option "With images". Default value is affected by enabling image storage, setting "Download images in batch download" and wifi restriction together.
If there is no geocache suitable for the operation in the current area, the app will indicate this. "Log list refresh limit" can be changed on "Settings → Cache data".
Download map tiles
Offline tile download is only available with a basemap that supports caching. In the layer selector and on the "Layer selector items" page, the archive/box icon indicates cacheable layers.
The following areas can be selected in the "Batch downloads" menu:
- Full screen.
- The environment of visible geocaches.
- Along a loaded track, if there is a loaded track.
- Along a route plan, if the plan has at least two points.
The download is tied to the map layer and the selected level of detail. The app can show a download start window, tile number and progress indicator. If there are no downloadable tiles in the current area and zoom, this is indicated by a separate message. Interrupting the process may ask for confirmation.
In the download window, the zoom levels are given a separate check box with the corresponding tile number next to them. Select the necessary details and then confirm the download. You don't have to download every level offered.
The selectable levels also depend on the starting map zoom and the source's native boundary. Too deep levels may be limited by the download, in which case the row cannot be selected. If you want a more detailed starting point, first zoom in on the desired area and open the download from there. More zoom levels require more tiles and storage.
Caching and Expiration
Access: "Settings → Offline use". Caching of map tiles, data sheet images and log images can be switched on separately. The expiration time for map tiles can be one day, one week, one month, one year, or no expiration.
Enabling caching enables storage; does not automatically start a full download for all content. The display setting for images "only on wifi" can be found separately on the "Settings → Cache data" page.
Automatic data update
On the "Settings → Offline use" page, the automatic update of the geocache list at start-up and connection to Wi-Fi can be set. Location databases have automatic update and expiration options on their settings pages.
At launch, the app can also display a common update offer for outdated databases. The warning does not make the data fresh: the offered update must be performed. The update status of the geocache data sheets, the geocache list and the POI databases must be interpreted separately.
Operations waiting list
The app can queue some network operations even without internet, for example supported updates, log submission and deletion, visit recording or cloud backup. The queue retries the task when the connection returns; Wi-Fi limited task can wait longer.
Access: "Settings → Developer log → Queue". The page shows the nature of the task, its creation, attempts, next attempt or waiting for Wi-Fi. It is not a general task manager: it only offers actions that actually appear on the interface.
The queued submission is not yet a result accepted by the server. Especially for site visits, the marking and progress changes after the confirmed server result. When downloading, offline queuing does not immediately make the missing content available.
Clear cache
In the "Settings → Offline use → Clear cache" section, you can delete by category: geocaches, geocache descriptions, map tiles, WebView cache, datasheet images, log images, other images and downloaded catalog tracks.
Your local copy of your chosen content will disappear and must be re-downloaded to use it offline again. The operation is not the same as server-side deletion of the log already submitted to geocaching.hu. Personal routes, places and recorded data are managed with their own lists and cloud backup.
