Map and layers

Map management, markers, level profile and terrain.

Map controls

Access: main menu → "Map" or the lower "Map" tab of the main page. You can move the map by dragging and zoom in for details. The magnifying glass on the top bar opens the map search bar, the download icon opens the "Batch downloads" menu, and the layer selection icon opens the content layers of the map.

Zoom buttons or slider depends on "Settings → Maps → Zoom control". "Double tap + drag to zoom" can be activated separately. The geocache's own tab "Map" is the map interface associated with the geocache and uses the same tracking settings as the main map.

Own position and north alignment

You can adjust the map to your own position with the lower right position button. If the map is rotated and auto-rotation is not turned on, the button first sets the map to north. To display your own location, you need enabled location data and an available position.

With a long press of the position button, you can turn on or off "Fix in the center" and "Rotate in direction". By tapping on the marker of your own position, you will also find separate switches for these, as well as for locking manual rotation.

Position tracking and direction rotation

By turning on "Fix in the middle", the map will follow your own position. "Rotate to direction" rotates the map to the direction indicated by the device. The two functions can be used separately and can also be set on the "Settings → Maps" page.

If you jump to a search result, your own location, a monitored point or another selected location on the main map, the app turns off tracking and turning in the direction so that the selected point remains on the image. If necessary, switch them back on manually. Due to the location of the geocache in the center on the internal map, the geocache may be out of sight if you are further away.

Base map selection

Open the layer selector in the top bar of the map. In the "Base map" section, you can choose a base map. The layer selection gear leads to the customization of the offer; the same is available via “Settings → Maps → Layer selector items”.

A geocaching.hu login is generally not required to use a base map. Some providers' maps require their own API key; you can enter this on the page "Settings → API keys". The separate overlay displaying personal finds is a different function to which a geocaching.hu account is connected.

Map elements and overlay layers

Additional content can be linked above the base map in the layer selector. Depending on the given map and the set offer, sections "Map elements", "Trail layers" and "Protected and restricted areas" will be displayed. With a vector base map, some elements can be switched separately.

If a layer is missing from the selector, see "Layer selector items". Enable in the list controls whether the layer appears in the selector; you actually turn it on in the layer selector on the map. Some currently used items cannot be hidden from the offer.

The page "Layer selector items" also contains a legend for the tourist routes and cycling markings of the vector map. The categories of locations drawn on the map are managed by the lower panel "Places".

Show route and route plan

A separate section is displayed in the layer selector in the case of a loaded route or compiled route plan. Here you can hide or show the line again. The track "Points" can be connected separately if it has points.

Turning off the display does not delete the saved data. Removing from the map, deleting the saved track and hiding the line are separate operations.

Elevation profile, section info and coloring

In the route or trail section of the layer selector, you can display the level profile of the given road with the "Elevation profile" switch. "Section info" can provide information about the current section's ascent, descent and remainder if the data is available.

The coloring of the route plan can be uniform, according to pavement, road type or slope. For a track, detailed coloring can only be selected if the loaded data contains information for this. A plain GPX line does not necessarily contain pavement or road type data. The available color scales can be found on the page "Settings → Route planning".

Markers and data windows

Tapping on the marker of a geocache, location or your own point opens the data window. The content varies by point type: name, coordinate, description, status, distance or external data sheet may also appear. Tapping on the name of the geocache opens the entire geocache data sheet.

The actions available in the data window include adding a waypoint, adding a waypoint, "Watch", "Navigation", and "Visiting" for a supported location. Adding to a trail requires a loaded trail, and visiting requires an appropriate category and account.

In addition to the type, the geocache marker can also reflect the sick or expired status, own hide, personal hit status and favorite mark. The heart belongs to the favorite mark. At a multipoint, the saved password fragment can result in a separate mark; this does not mean that the entire multibox has been submitted successfully. Since several states can coexist, check the details in the marker's data window and the geocache data sheet.

Grouping, size and colors

Many nearby markers can be grouped together by the app. Zoom in on the area for details. On the "Settings → Maps" page, you can set the grouping grid size, the grouping deactivation zoom threshold, and the size of the markers.

In the same place, you can give a different color to the route plan, the loaded trail, the fixed trail, the connecting line of the multipoints, and the marking of forest visitation restrictions. Display of GPS accuracy helps to interpret position uncertainty.

The accuracy circle around one's own position illustrates the uncertainty of the phone's location measurement. If the circle is large, treat the indicated situation with greater uncertainty; does not specify the search area of the geocache.

Setting the time of day for terrain shading

If the supported terrain shading layer is active on the used map, a separate time of day control may appear on the map. You can open or close the panel with the corresponding button, and you can change the time used for shading with the slider.

When you drag the slider, the map follows the change in preview, when you release it, the selected time is saved. This is to illustrate the lighting of the terrain; not a route planning departure time and not a measurement of the live lighting conditions of the location. The control is only visible when the associated layer is active.

Select any point on the map

You can mark any point on the map as a temporary point with a long press. You can also use the map action associated with right-clicking in a desktop browser. The next such selection changes the location of the previous temporary point.

A long press only places the marker; you have to tap on it separately for its data window. The marker can be dragged to another location and opened again in its new location.

In the data window of the temporary point, the coordinate and the operation "Save as my place" are displayed. The point can also be used for route planning, navigation and other available point operations. If you want to keep the location, save it as your own location; do not treat the temporary marker as a saved personal location. You can also remove it with the action "Delete point".

When planning a route, add the current location of the marker to the plan, then drag it to the next destination and add it separately as well. This allows the same temporary marker to be used to record multiple consecutive waypoints. After crossing, you can also start navigation to its new location with the action "Navigation".

Route or trail line data window

A separate data sheet may open when you select the line of the route plan or trail displayed on the map. The name, description, length and available level data can be displayed for the trail, and the profile, planning method and estimated travel time can also be displayed for the planned route.

If a level or time data is missing, the interface may indicate an unavailable value. The summary data window of the line differs from the point data window of geocaches and locations; search for complete editing operations on the bottom tab "Route plan" or "Track".

Interactive level profile and zoom

Load a trail or plan a route, then display the diagram using the "Elevation profile" switch of the given road in the map's layer selector. For this, the elevation data of the road must also be available.

You can look at the points of the road by touching and dragging on the curve of the diagram linked to the map: the appropriate place is shown by the marker on the map. By touching and dragging the line of the route or track on the map - with the mouse button pressed - the corresponding part of the diagram can also be followed. Your position and waypoints can also appear on the profile if they can be placed based on the available data. The own signal shows the moving position projected on the line, not the current height measured by the GPS.

You can enlarge the profile horizontally by spreading it with two fingers. In an enlarged view, you can move along the diagram by dragging the lower axis bar containing the distance numbers. Zooming with the mouse wheel and dragging the axis bar with the mouse can also be used in a desktop browser.

On the diagrams embedded in the data page of "Route info" and "Track", zooming and moving the axis bar are available, but the selection of map points by dragging along the curve is disabled. For the test linked to the map, turn on the profile on the map.

Connecting the details of your own vector map

When using the own vector basemap called “Geoládák”, “POIs”, “House numbers”, “Cycling routes” and “Trail markings” can be switched separately in the “Map elements” part of the layer selector. These are the elements within the base map; they are not the same as the location markers displayed from the "Places" panel, which have a separate data window.

If you don't see these switches, check that you are using your own vector basemap and that the items you want are enabled on the "Settings → Maps → Layer selector items" page. The house numbers and signs downloaded as an image of a raster base map are not modified by these switches.

3D terrain and relief display

In the layer selector of the map, in the "Map elements" section, turn on the option "3D terrain" if it is included in the selector. The map then displays the terrain with the available elevation data. The topography is clearer in the tilted map view.

If the map cannot be tilted, check the "Settings → Maps → Block manual rotation" switch: blocking also disables manual tilting. "Hillshade" can be switched separately and has its own time of day slider. 3D terrain and shading are separate display options; neither is calculating a new route. The result depends on the coverage of your topography data.

Zoom, rotate and tilt with gestures

On the touch screen, you can zoom in by spreading two fingers apart, and zoom out by pinching them together. You can zoom in by double-tapping with one finger, and you can zoom out by tapping with two fingers at the same time. In a desktop browser, you can also change the zoom with the mouse wheel.

For one-handed zoom, turn on "Settings → Maps → Double tap + drag to zoom". Tap twice quickly, but on the second tap keep your finger on the display: drag down to zoom in, drag up to zoom out. This handles the map, does not place a temporary waypoint.

Rotate the map with two fingers; you can tilt the view by moving two fingers together vertically. Blocking manual rotation also disables tilting. To adjust to the north, use the lower right position button a TERKEP-02 according to

What do the distances shown at the point mean?

The data window of a geocache can include the difficulty of hiding, the difficulty of the terrain and, if specified, the length of the path associated with the geocache. This distance is part of your geocache data; not a freshly calculated approach from your own position.

The meaning of the separate distance data:

DataWhat does it show?
Distance as the crow fliesThe direct distance between your own position and the selected point.
Distance according to route planThe distance between your own position and the location of the target projected onto the route along the line, along with the differences in the air between the points and the line.
Track distanceThe same on the line of the currently loaded trace.

The route and track data can only be calculated if there is a suitable loaded line. The extension leading to the line is aerial: the projection does not plan a separate walkable approach to the point further from the line. If the geocache is not directly on the road, check its actual location on the map.

Heat map of hits and site visits

In the layer selector, turn on the overlay layer "Found heatmap". If it is missing from the offer, enable it on the page "Settings → Maps → Layer selector items". The current interface requires a geocaching.hu login to activate the layer.

The heat map illustrates the spatial density of locally available geocache finds and POI visits. Visit data for the cloud storage account is also required for the visit part. If the geocache finds are missing, update the geocache list by logging in; you can check the visits on the profile's discovery surfaces.

This is an overview of personal activity, not a GPS recording of the route traveled and not a popularity map of other users. Its appearance also changes with magnification.
