Route planning

Compile, save and export routes.

Conditions and the role of the itinerary

The route plan is the route between the specified points, calculated according to the selected traffic profile and settings. Server computing requires an internet connection. The native Android and iOS app requires a monthly supporter license or your own OpenRouteService API key. The browser version can also plan with built-in web access, without monthly support rights; the availability and current limitations of the service also matter here.

The private key can be entered in the field "Settings → API keys → OpenRouteService (HeiGIT)". Monthly support can be managed on Android and iOS at “Café”. Using your own key is an alternative to route planning, not an unlocking of Google location search.

The bottom tab "Route plan" edits the current plan. The "Route plans" page of the main menu contains previously saved designs.

Starting point and adding additional points

  1. On the map, open the data window of the starting point and select the action "Route from here" if you are starting a new plan.
  2. Pick up additional waypoints from the data window of the following places. The caption may be "New point" depending on the state of the plan.
  3. Open the bottom tab "Route plan" to check the points list.

Your own position can be recorded with the button "+ Current position". This adds a new point to the list; check the desired starting or intermediate order in the point list. Without usable location data, positioning must first work.

You can add arbitrary map locations in a row with the same draggable temporary marker:

  1. Long press the desired point on the map to place the temporary marker.
  2. Tap the marker to open the data window, then use the action "Route from here" or "New point" for the current plan.
  3. Drag the temporary marker to the next desired location.
  4. Tap on it again and add its new location to the route with the "New point" option.
  5. Repeat the drag and drop for additional targets.

Each time you add it, you take the current location of the temporary marker, so you can create several consecutive waypoints with a single movable marker. Crossing out by itself does not add a new point to the plan: the new location must be added separately. If you only want to navigate to your current location, you can choose the action "Navigation" in the data window; you can use this again after moving. Saving as own location is not required for any use.

Sequence, deletion of points and deletion of the entire plan

Access: "Route plan → Parameters → Route waypoints". The order of the points can be changed by dragging with the rearrangement handle. To delete a point, drag the line to the left, then select the "Delete" button.

The trash can icon in the upper bar initiates the deletion of the entire current plan; not just the selected point. In some versions, the help of the empty list also mentions a trash can icon for line-by-line deletion, but the action that appears when you drag the line to the left is the text button "Delete".

Profiles, design modes and avoidances

You can change the traffic profile on the "Route plan → Parameters" page. A separate pedestrian profile can be selected for walking and hiking; for bicycles, you can choose between general, road, mountain and electric bike profiles. A car profile is also available. Adapt the profile to the planned transport: road cycling and mountain cycling require different planning considerations. The design method can be a recommended or shortest path; "shortest" is not another name for cycling profile.

Among the bypasses, elements matching the profile appear: for example, a ferry, ford, stairs, highway or toll road. When changing profiles, the available dodges may also change.

The "Preferred route" card appears only when the selected profile supports such options. There, additional aspects supported by the profile can be set, such as a greener or quieter road and a cycling preference related to the slope. These are the designer settings; the result also depends on the service provider's data.

Summary, sections and coloring

After a successful calculation, the "Route info" page shows the length, the estimated travel time, all ascents and descents, the height profile and the sections. Without a calculated route, the information page cannot necessarily be selected.

"Route coloring" offers a uniform display by pavement, road type or slope. If the server did not return data for the selected mode, the app will indicate this. The coloring legend can be found on “Settings → Route planning”.

From the map layer selector, the display of route, elevation profile and "Section info" can be managed separately. If the road crosses a protected or restricted area, the application can give a signal based on the available area data.

Save and load route

With the top save icon of the current "Route plan" you can give the plan a name and a description as needed. The saved route is added to the "Route plans" list in the main menu.

You can search the list and sort by name or distance. Tap on a plan to load it after confirmation. Loading overwrites the currently edited plan, so save the current plan to be kept first.

Modify, copy and delete a saved route

In the "Main menu → Route plans" list, the menu of the given plan includes the modification, "Duplicate", export, "Save as track" and delete operations.

Changing the name and description will manage the data of the saved item. To change the order of points or design parameters, load the design into the current editor. "Duplicate" creates a separate copy, so you can keep the previous plan. The deletion will ask for confirmation.

GPX and FIT export, Garmin points

You can export with the top share icon of the current "Route plan" or from the export menu of the saved plan. The format offered is GPX or "FIT (Garmin)"; When choosing FIT, you must also specify the type of sport. Additional steps to save or share the file are handled by the tool.

Additional point settings can be revealed with the "Show Garmin points" switch in the point list. "Automatic" or selected Garmin point type for compatible export describes the nature of the point; for example, you can distinguish a food, danger or control point.

"Save as track" creates a saved track from the calculated plan. Then the operations of trace management can be applied to it.

Default values and troubleshooting

You can set the default values for new designs on the "Settings → Route planning" page: profile, design mode, avoidances, preferences, coloring and zooming to the entire route. Manage the parameters of the current plan on the "Route plan" tab.

If the calculation fails, check the network, the order of the points and the selected profile. In the native mobile application, you can also view your own key or your monthly supporter entitlement. The app can also display the error message and error code of the design server. Displaying a previously saved line and recalculating a route are separate operations; recalculation requires a connection.

Pavement, road category and slope ratios

Access: after successful planning "Route plan → Route info → Route coloring". Choose "Surface", "Way type" or "Steepness". The colored lines below the selector show the percentage of the given categories and their length in kilometers.

This way, in addition to the total distance, you can also compare the parts of the planned road: for example, what is the ratio of each pavement. The color can be interpreted together with the map sections. The breakdown is based on additional data received from the planning server; if the data is missing, the app will indicate this. This is the composition of the planned road, not the actual condition measured on site.

Planning a long-distance tour and approaching the starting point

If the tour does not start from your current location, find the actual starting point on the map, such as a parking lot or the beginning of a trail. Open the point's data window and select "Route from here" for a new plan. Then add the other points of the tour. In the point list of "Route plan → Parameters", check whether the desired place is really listed first; a line of unnecessary points can be deleted by dragging to the left.

If the map jumps to the full path after each new point is added, and this makes it difficult to select nearby points, turn off the "Settings → Route planning → Zoom to fit route" setting.

To reach the starting point of the tour, you can separately use the "Navigation" action in the data window of the point. You give the selected destination to the external application, not automatically the complete, multi-point Geoládák route plan. To transfer the entire path to another device, use export.
